Kommentar/Beschreibung

Development seems to be a straightforward notion. However, when critically examining the different approaches to development, the contested nature of this rather young concept becomes apparent. By contextualising the notion of development with the particular experience and trajectory of Indonesia, we aim to 1) explore the different approaches from state developmentalism via sustainable development to well-being, 2) ground these in the (colonial) history and present of the Indonesian archipelago and 3) illustrate them by zooming into selected topics. These cover central topics such as inequality and social exclusion, the Green Economy and its consequences for indigenous people, the Blue Economy and conflicts over ecologies such as algae and alternative agriculture framed by a more-than-human approach.
This course is the first collaboration between the Universitas Indonesia and the University of Passau in joint teaching. Both universities agreed to co-operate in the field of Development and Southeast Asian Studies with the long-term perspective of a joint international MA program. While this joint online seminar serves as a venue for the academic and practical dialogue and exchange on Development Studies between staff and students from Universitas Indonesia and University of Passau, it offers a unique possibility for students to engage in an international setting with their counterparts.
The course is structured by inputs from German and Indonesian lecturers and open to students of MA Development Studies as well as BA KuWi with a specialization of Southeast Asia. The course requires consistent attendance, international teamwork and reflective writing. Students will enhance their intercultural communication skills, presentation and writing while expanding their knowledge on the concept of development, Indonesia and topics addressing social-ecological inequality.
