We are happy to continue our open discussion forum GMA this semester and look forward to weekly meetings of recapping and contextualizing U.S. current affairs, including the upcoming midterm elections.
GMA started in the summer semester of 2025 as a space to discuss and better understand the objectives, motives, and systematicity of the current U.S. administration’s policies from a critical humanities perspective. Our conversations over the past semesters have strengthened our resolve that it is more necessary than ever to better understand the divisive culture that seems to have become part of public discourses – and to discuss what to do about it.

Even if you were not able to join last semester, but are interested in joining a safe space that is open to different opinions and interested in myriad points of view, please join us every Tuesday for an hour between 6 and 7 pm in LU8 SR 309.
GMA has evolved into an English-speaking group with occasional German commentary, but all participants are welcome to speak in either language. You do not need to prepare for a session, nor do you have to commit to participating for an entire semester – just come and join when you can and feel like it, and we’ll make sure to pull up an extra chair. While we welcome strong opinions and intersectional approaches, it’s also fine to simply join and listen for a while. You might even just like to share your opinion on our forum in writing.
We ask that our discussions remain respectful at all times.

The sessions this semester are hosted by either Prof. Dr. Karsten Fitz or Florian Zitzelsberger, and the subject of every session is generated from the session before through pointers from participants.
Please note that GMA will not take place in the first and last two weeks of the semester; our first meeting will take place on October 27, 2026.
