Tourism is often seen as a vehicle for development in Africa. African governments enthusiastically adopt tourism as a growth strategy in countries which have experienced an increase in visitor flows and where policy makers regard the tourism sector as important for job creation. However, while tourism impacts positively on the livelihoods and wellbeing of host communities in certain respects, negative impacts can also be discerned. Moreover, the environmental impacts of tourism is increasingly an issue of concern e.g. in the light of climate change. During this course, we will reflect on the potential, pitfalls and arising policy responses in relation to tourism development in Africa within a responsible tourism framework which considers economic, social and environmental imperatives. Suggested topics for discussion: - Mass tourism in the African context - Culture and heritage tourism - Conservation, nature-based tourism and communities - Township tourism - Pro-poor tourism - Voluntourism: volunteering for community upliftment and/or conservation - Adventure tourism - Urban tourism in African cities - Backpacking in Africa
...
Course participants should discuss topic drawing from the literature and case examples, and seek to unpack the nature of the tourism type chosen, consider spatial issues (where does the type of tourism take place, who are the affected communities?), and weigh positive and negative outcomes while reflecting on responsible tourism (economic, social and environmental) impacts.
Suggestions for additional topics (other than the ones outlined) are welcome
