1x Research Project (individual, 80%, delivery date on 21/06/2022):
This assignment takes the form of a research project with an academic paper. Each individual must academically explore and reflect on one topic related to a specific journalistic field, genre, or practice of their choice. Each research project must deliver an 8 to 10-page scientific paper containing the following elements: abstract, introduction, review of literature, research methods, findings and analysis, discussion, limitations, future scope and references.

1x Oral Presentation (individual, 20%, delivery date on 15/05/2022):
This task is expected to explain the research project idea - both the expected outcomes and process. More creative presentation approaches, that go beyond conventional formats (e.g., PowerPoint or similar setups), are encouraged and will be considered as a creative dimension with direct impact on the final grade. Kommentar/Beschreibung

Dozent: Dr. António Baía Reis | http://www.antoniobaiareis.com

In today’s seemingly everchanging and profoundly affective media environment, specialized journalism, or what in the American context is known as ‘beat’, has been going through profound transformations with the rise of the digital era. Understanding the role that specialization plays in structuring journalistic production has never been more crucial given that nowadays traditional journalistic genres like sports, political or arts journalism must coexist with an extensive array of emerging practices such as data or AI journalism. Consequently, conceptualizing the place of specialized journalism requires a nuanced approach given the apparent theoretical blurriness when in face of emergent practices, mostly the ones born out of technological innovations. Drawing on theories and debates in media and communication studies and other fields directly related to specific journalistic subfields, genres and formats, this course interrogates today’s importance, role and challenges of specialised journalism. Exploring key concepts, histories, theories and methodologies surrounding the specificities of various areas of journalistic production, such as politics, culture, arts or sports, this course will enable students to engage critically and creatively with ways in which specialized journalism is produced and experienced.
