A key challenge to publishing in top journals in management and business remains the development of convincing and clearly constructed theory. But what is good theory and how does one develop and communicate it effectively? In this interactive workshop, we will be looking at best practice in theory development, seeking to break down the process of theory building and examining both content and process issues. There will be some pre-reading and attendees will be invited to bring their own problems to share, discuss, and address. We will also look at examples of reviewer feedback and how best to tackle requests for substantive changes, which are often related to theory-building. Patrizia will share her own experiences with Gender, Work and Organization and Accounting, Organizations and Society and what to do, for example, when reviewers provide seemingly conflicting suggestions or when a revision is indicated as high risk. Attendees are also encouraged to bring any reviews they are currently responding to and there will be time to think about these collectively. If you are interested in the job market for academics in the UK, please indicate this when registering. There will be time to talk about differences in the UK academic job market, think about advantages and disadvantages, outlining the process, where and when to apply, and navigating common challenges. Patrizia is also happy to meet separately with any researchers hoping to develop their careers in the UK.
