Kommentar/Beschreibung

Content:
This is an interactive seminar over two days, The focus is on the craft of writing, with an emphasis on “learning by doing”.
On the first day we explore basic sentence structures and key features of academic writing, and participants learn to apply simple rules and tips for building up words into “academic sentences”. On the second day we review the language structures used in different sections of an essay or academic paper and work on building up sentences into paragraphs to create longer sections of text.
The content of the seminar is designed to meet the needs of non-native speakers of English who write and publish in English. It is suitable for master’s level students, as well as those finishing their bachelor’s degree or starting out on their doctoral studies.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the seminar, participants will:
1. Feel confident about expressing their ideas in written English
2. Know how to build up sentences that meet the standards of “good practice” and “good style” required for academic writing at postgraduate level
3. Be able to join sentences together to create paragraphs, using language structures and vocabulary that are appropriate for different sections of an academic paper
4. Have the capacity to critically review and improve their own writing
5. Have an awareness of their personal competencies and what they could do to further improve their academic writing skills.
