Comment/Description

One of the central phenomena of the digital economy is the growing importance of digital platforms and their surrounding ecosystems. Digital platforms are internet-based intermediaries that create and capture value by enabling, facilitating, and managing exchanges and interactions between participants who affiliate with the platform (e.g., users, providers of products or services). A digital platform thus forms the core of a dynamic ecosystem of complementary and interconnected actors with a multitude of interdependencies. In many of the currently most highly valued companies, digital platform ecosystems are a mainstay of corporate strategy.
Rooted in the University of Passau’s DFG Research and Training Group Digital Platform Ecosystems (DPE), this interactive seminar-workshop aims to raise excitement for and develop a comprehensive understanding of the burgeoning research on Strategic Management in and around DPEs. In particular, we address questions such as:
• What are the most important conceptual end empirical contributions to the emerging field of research?
• What are the most pressing research gaps and questions in the Strategy community’s understanding of digital platform ecosystems?
• What are normative, conceptual, and methodological challenges for the study of DPEs from a strategy perspective?
• How do we set up and study digital platform ecosystems to make major contributions to the field, both within and outside management and organization research?
