Kommentar/Beschreibung

An increasingly diverse student body and the growing importance of gender and diversity bring new challenges for university lecturers in recent years. What should gender and diversity-sensitive teaching look like? Which options do I have for adapting content and methods to the different needs, talents, and expectations of my students? How can I communicate, motivate, inspire and empower in a way that is inclusive and enables participation?

This course focuses on two main perspectives of diversity-sensitive teaching: Self-reflection/Awareness and Diversity-sensitive communication in teaching contexts. Participants will learn about theories of diversity and methods how to apply these into an aware and inclusive yet pragmatic teaching style. The course is designed to enable participants to acquire new knowledge and exchange their existing expertise and experience amongst each other in order to hone their skills and further equip their toolbox with inclusive habits and methods for diversity-sensitive education and communication.

This seminar is part of the certificate "Diversity & Gender".

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to,
• explain the basics of gender and diversity competences in university teaching
• analyse their own identity as well as imprints, thought and action patterns and relate these to their role as a teacher (e.g. stereotypes, unconscious bias).
• present the current state of knowledge on gender and diversity issues in their subject area and explain the social framework conditions (e.g. discrimination, minority stress).
• describe and apply methods for the gender- and diversity-sensitive communication in learning environments in order to take into account different origins, learning types, talents and motivations.
• recognise group processes and describe and implement options for dealing with heterogeneity and diversity (e.g. enabling participation, preventing microaggressions).
