Comment/Description

Imagine you have a Nobel-Prize-worthy insight, but nobody ever hears of it … Doing great science is important, but much of the scientific process and scientific progress is determined by how well you are able to share your in-sights in personal communication with others. From explaining your initial idea to colleagues, to presenting at conferences, to your job talk at your dream university: Presenting science is a key skill for any scholar, perhaps especially in the social sciences.
In this highly interactive seminar, we will learn and apply some fundamental techniques for powerful, inspirational, and the same time profound scholarly presentations. We will especially focus on aspects such as setting the hook, weaving in stories and anecdotal evidence thoughtfully, visualizing theory and data in insightful figures and charts, as well as body language and vocal delivery. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other and to use video-recordings and other tools to reflect and improve.
