I. Content The course "European and International Monetary Law" is aimed at law students, International Economics as well as Governance and Public Policy programs and other studies providing for a specialization in European Law. It provides in-depth knowledge of International and European Monetary Law. The course is divided into three parts: The first part provides for an interdisciplinary introduction to money and currencies. The second part focuses on International Monetary Law and especially monetary relations. The final part consists of a detailed study of European Monetary Law (European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)). II. Course Organization This course covers a period of 14 weekly lecture hours. It consists of 14 units (Unit 1: Interdisciplinary Introduction into Money and Currencies, Units 2-6: International Monetary Law, Units 7-14: European Monetary Law/European Monetary Union). Every week, one unit will be activated for use. Every unit includes a theoretical script of approximately 10 pages. Additionally, multiple choice and essay questions are provided as a means of self-assessment. After a given period, sample answers to the essay questions will be released. Moreover, the various units contain also suggestions for additional readings, further materials and links. III. Exams At the end of the course there will be a final examination at the University of Passau and an online test for law students from other universities. The final examination for law students, whether in Passau or online, consists of a 30-minute multiple choice test (the exact date will be announced on ILIAS, Stud.IP and the CECIL website). The examination in Passau as well as the online test, will take place at the same time and date. For other degrees there is the possibility to write an essay which may be submitted online (this depends on the specific requirements of the study regulations of your degree course). If the final examination is successfully completed, students will be awarded a credit (“Schein”) which at the University of Passau will count towards the CECIL (“Certificate of Studies in European, Comparative and International Law”) as well as – within the scope of the Master Courses’ study regulations - towards the degrees “International Economics” and “Governance and Public Policy - Staatswissenschaften”. Furthermore, it is possible to use the successfully completed final examination to acquire the “Pflichtfremdsprachenschein” according to § 24 II JAPO (Ausbildungs- und Prüfungsordnung für Juristen). Please register online for the exams via the website of the “Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern”. Make sure to choose the right exam option. If you wish to write an essay, please contact the course coordinator as this is only optional.
