Each session discusses a related scientific paper in more detail. Students are required to read the paper. The final examination is a written exam.

Kommentar/Beschreibung

Biogeography is the study of the geographical distribution of species and ecosystems through time. Looking back into geological times shows how plate tectonics and past climatic changes have influenced species evolution and distribution. To date, global change that is processes such as climate and land use change as well as the spread of invasive species is strongly affecting species and ecosystems. This lecture first looks back at species distributions in geological times, then discusses current global change effects and finally provides an outlook into the future distribution of species and ecosystems. We will also discuss how current climate and land use policies can help mitigating and adapting to global change with examples from different regions of the world, such as the tropics, the temperate and the boreal zone.
The lecture is organised by Prof. Christine Schmitt with contributions by Dr. Gregor Mathes, Dr. João de Deus Vidal (University of Leipzig; Germany), and other guests.
