Kommentar/Beschreibung

Content:
This is an interactive seminar over two days, with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own writing skills and will have the opportunity to raise questions relating to their current work.
The content of the seminar is designed to meet the needs of non-native speakers of English who write and publish in English. It is designed for master’s level students, but will also be useful for those finishing their bachelor’s degree or starting out on their doctoral studies.
On the first day we focus on building up words into sentences. The emphasis is on basic sentence structures and key features of academic writing, such as precision and conciseness. On the second day we review the language structures used in different sections of an essay or academic paper (such as Materials and Methods, and Results) and work on building up sentences into paragraphs to create longer sections of text. Throughout the seminar, group work sessions provide the opportunity for participants to practice what they have learned.

Additional information:
Seminar materials will be distributed by email at the end of the seminar, including copies of the PowerPoint presentations and a summary of useful vocabulary and language structures.
After the seminar, personal feedback (on Zoom) is offered to participants who complete and submit the optional written homework, consisting of a short extract from one of their own writing assignments.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the seminar, participants will:
  • Feel confident about expressing their ideas in English
  • Be able to meet the standards of “good practice” and “good style” required for academic writing at postgraduate level
  • Be able to select and use language structures and vocabulary that are appropriate for different sections of an academic paper
  • Have the capacity to critically review and improve their own writing
  • Have an awareness of their personal competencies and what they could do to further improve their academic writing skills
