Kommentar/Beschreibung

Learning Goals:
The students will
  • learn the key differences between Great Britain and Germany and how these differences affect everyday interactions and the way of life
  • gain a deep understanding of British core values which will bring light upon recent political developments such as Brexit, and help explain current attitudes in British society
  • learn to “read between the lines” and deal effectively with conflict in a way that ensures avoiding misunderstandings and develops self-confidence in communication with the British
  • develop flexibility with key tools, such as small talk, which will be practised to develop effective bonding and communication skills

Contents:
This interactive seminar sensitises the students for the idiosyncrasies of the British, and what it means to be culturally socialised in Great Britain. What are the key values that affect British behaviour? Why do the British tend to say everything indirectly and why is politeness and diplomacy so highly valued in a land that once fought for an empire? What is meant by the “island mentality” and how does geography and history affect British citizens? The students will be taken on a one day journey to the island by the through the eyes of a British national and immersed in “Britishness”. Students will be expected to take an active role in the seminar by means of simulation and role play, in order to practice key skills for understanding and communicating effectively with the British
