Kommentar/Beschreibung

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the seminar, participants will:
  • Feel confident about expressing their ideas in English
  • Be able to meet the standards of “good practice” and “good style” required for academic writing at postgraduate level
  • Be able to select and use language structures and vocabulary that are appropriate for different sections of an academic paper
  • Have the capacity to critically review and improve their own writing
  • Have an awareness of their personal competencies and what they could do to further improve their academic writing skills

Content:
This is an interactive seminar with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own writing skills, and will also have the opportunity to raise questions relating to their current work.
Participants will attend online tutorials on Zoom and be given individual assignments in which they apply what they have learned. Feedback will be provided individually in face-to-face online meetings and/or by email, and in the final online group session. Online tutorials will be programmed for Saturday and Sunday mornings, with written work carried out during the week before or after the tutorial.
The focus of the seminar is on the use of language in academic writing. This is looked at from two angles: (1) the general features of (good) academic writing; and (2) the specific language structures used to perform the different functions of academic writing (in the different sections of a typical essay or academic paper). The seminar will use mixed methods that take advantage of the interactive opportunities that online platforms offer for teaching writing skills.

Additional information:
Before the first online session participants are required to submit an Abstract (250–500 words) for a piece of their own written work. In order to participate fully in the online workshops, participants should access Zoom from their laptop (and not a smartphone).
